The CCA, in collaboration with Dr Siona O’Connell (University of Pretoria), hosted a Dumm workshop and tournament yesterday (1 September 2019) at St Mary’s Church in Woodstock, Cape Town.
Dumm is a board game, thought to have been brought to Cape Town by Indonesian slaves, and popular in communities such as the Bo Kaap, Woodstock and the Cape Flats.
The tournament created an opportunity to gather, for the first time, a large group of Dumm players where we interviewed and documented some of the history and movement of the game within Cape Town.
This project, which is set to manifest as a 360 degree short film (November 2019) and documentary (January 2020), seeks to trace the history of slavery and forced removals through this game.
